Part 1 - Heading out!

The weather was perfect for a drive. Clear, dry, comfortable and most of the traffic along the way was headed in the opposite direction. Our stops were few and brief. The 412 miles to get to Intercourse, PA was the shortest time and mileage since we started visiting the Lancaster area in 1983. Thanks to the PA route 222 improvements, we can now bypass a handful of towns we normally had to drive through.
It did cloud up and remained cool nearly the entire drive, which made it all the better for a long drive. Easing onto the narrow Amish farm roads meant we were nearing our destination. Rolling along between the tall corn stalks is a treat in and of itself, especially when you realize all of the work that a single Amish family must do to produce such wondrous results.
Settling in we found ourselves basking in the afternoon heat scurrying to take refuge in our motor home’s A/C. Our weather radio began hawking the approaching severe thunderstorm warnings that were to our east. The fickle weather made a surprise visit to our local. A huge dark cloud wandered overhead and unleashed a torrent of rain and blustery wind with vivid lightning. The fast moving storm edged away leaving us with a refreshingly cool evening.
We visited with our Amish friends, Abner and Becky and their daughter Rosie, caught up on all of the latest news and even discussed a little bit of politics.
The next morning Pat checked the morning temps and we soon came to know what the weather had in store for us. The mercury could climb into the high 90’s. The hottest days of the summer were on us. Pat and I headed for the “Kitchen Kettle” shopping plaza only to find out that nothing is open until9:00a.m. A brief walk about town passed the time away and we were once again “sampling” all of the jams and jellies of the Kitchen Kettle. We visited with Abner and Becky as they opened their Coach Shop for the day, and headed back to the campground to plan our day.
Old age is really creeping in on us! Pat is doing the “lion’s share” of keeping track of bills and such, but for some reason one tiny little item slipped right by us! We lost all track of renewing the vehicle registrations! They are due at the end of August. We went into a self induced panic mode and we began a quest to resolve our dilemma. A phone call to our City Hall helped clear our heads. But, it’ll take the help of Pat’s Sister and her husband and our Park owner, Laura to complete the renewal process. Angela and Bill armed with a check made a bee-line to our Town Hall and Pat and I sought the help of Laura to get the documents to us somewhere in Indiana. We want to offer Angela, Bill and Laura a huge thank you.
You can bet that vehicle registrations will be listed on our “check-off” sheets in the future!
This past June we visited this area and watched as the campground’s neighbor, farmer Sam, began work on his tobacco drying barn. Well, it’s finished and in service.
And that’s how things are going.
Dave and Pat
